About Our Mission

Dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich traditions of hospitality from cultures around the world, helping create meaningful connections across boundaries.

Why Hospitality Traditions Matter

In an increasingly connected world, the way we welcome others speaks volumes about our values, our respect for diversity, and our capacity for genuine human connection. Yet many traditional hospitality practices are fading as globalization homogenizes our interactions.

We founded orchard-caribou with a belief that these traditions deserve to be preserved, understood, and thoughtfully adapted for modern contexts. When a host understands the significance behind offering tea in a particular manner, or the meaning of specific greeting gestures, the act of welcome transforms from routine into something profound.

Our Approach

We work with cultural historians, anthropologists, and practitioners from diverse backgrounds to ensure our teachings reflect authentic traditions rather than superficial stereotypes. Every program we design is grounded in respect and scholarly research, while remaining practical and applicable.

Our methodology combines historical context with hands-on learning. We believe that understanding the "why" behind hospitality customs makes their practice more meaningful and helps prevent well-intentioned but potentially offensive missteps in cross-cultural situations.

  • Authenticity First: We partner with cultural experts and community members to ensure accurate representation of traditions
  • Practical Application: Theory matters, but our programs emphasize skills you can use immediately
  • Respectful Adaptation: We help you honour traditions while adapting them thoughtfully to your context
  • Continuous Learning: Cultures evolve, and so does our understanding—we stay current through ongoing research
  • Inclusive Perspective: We celebrate the diversity of hospitality traditions without hierarchies or judgments

Our History

orchard-caribou began in 2018 when our founders, themselves children of immigrant families, recognized a gap in how businesses and individuals approached multicultural hospitality. Too often, well-meaning attempts at cultural inclusion fell flat due to superficial understanding or outdated information.

What started as a series of small workshops for local businesses grew into a comprehensive consultancy serving clients across Canada and internationally. Today, we work with hospitality brands, corporate offices, event planners, and individuals who want to deepen their understanding of how the world welcomes.
